The Tenth Hadith from Arba’in Nawawi: Order to Eat Good Food from the Halal Way

The following is the tenth hadith from the hadith book arba’in nawawi, which explains the Commandments to eat halal and good food in lawful ways and do good deeds. As told in the hadith that someone who eats unclean food (haram), wears contaminated clothing (haram), and obtains it from illegal methods (haram), Allah SWT will not answer his prayer. Studying the tenth hadith from the arba’in nawawi hadith is helpful for us to increase our faith and piety.

Latin Inscription

‘An Abi Huroirota rodhiyalllahu ‘anhu qola : qola rosulullahi shollallahu ‘alaihi wasallama innallaha ta’alaa thoyyibun la yaqbalu illa thoyyiban, wa innallaha amarol mu’miniina bima amaro bihil mursaliina faqola ta’alaa ya ayyuhar rusulu kuluu min thoyyibaati ma rozaqnakum tsumma dzakaro rojula yuthiilus safaro asy’ata aghbaro yamuddu yadaihi ilas samaa I ya robbi ya robbi wa math’amuhu kharoomun wamasyrobuhu kharomun wamalsabuhu kharomun wa ghunniya bil kharoomi fa anna yustajaabu lahu (rowahu muslim)

It means :

From Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu he said: Rasulullah shallallahu`alaihi wa sallam said: Verily Allah ta’ala is good, does not accept except what is good. And indeed, Allah commands the believers as He ordered His messengers with His words: O Apostles, eat well and do good deeds. And He said: O you who believe, eat of the good of what We have provided for you. Then he mentioned that someone was traveling long distances in a tangled and dusty state. He raised his hands to the sky and said: O my Lord, O my Lord, even though his food is unclean (haram), his drink is diluted (haram), his clothes are dirty (haram), and his needs are met from something messy (haram), then (if that is the case) how will his prayer be granted. (Narrated by Muslim).

Here are seven contents or contents of the hadith above:

  1. An order for believers to eat good and lawful food as written in the Qur’an in Surah Al Baqoroh verse 172 and Al Mu’minuun verse 51.
  2. An order for believers to do good deeds as written in the style of the Qur’an Surat al Mu’minuun verse 51.
  3. The prayer of a person who eats unclean things (haram), drinks from dirty things (haram), wears unclean clothes (haram), and fulfills his needs through illegal means, his prayer will not be answered.
  4. An order to believers to work to earn money legally, not from unclean practices. Because if he gets money or fulfills his needs illegitimately, his good deeds are rejected.
  5. A servant will be rewarded if he eats something good with the intention that he will be given the strength to obey Allah.
  6. The prayers of people on a long journey and whose hearts hope will come true.
  7. In the hadith, there are several reasons for the granting of prayer:

  • Long journeys
  • modest conditions in clothing and appearance in a wrinkled and dusty state
  • raising both hands to the sky
  • wailing in prayer
  • strong desires in requests
  • consuming food, drink, and dressing with something lawful (halal)
