What is Amil Nawashib?
Amil Nawashib refers to particles that cause a present tense verb (fi’il mudhori’) to become manshub (in the accusative state) or marked with a fathah. Scholars differ regarding the number of amil nawashib. Some say there are ten particles, while others state that there are only four. As written in Alfiyah Ibn Malik, verse 677:
وَبِلَنِ انْصِبْهُ وَكَيْ كَذَابِأنْ لاَبَعْدَعِلْمٍ وَالَّتِي مِنْ بَعْدِ ظَنَّ
Meaning:
“Make the fi’il mudhori’ manshub using lan (لَنْ), kay (كَى), and an (أَنْ) when it is not preceded by a verb that indicates certainty. As for an (أَنْ) that comes after a verb of assumption, it indicates a meaning of presumption.”
It is also written in Alfiyah verse 700:
وَنَصَبُوَابِإِذَنِ الْمُسْتَقْبَلاَ إِنْ صُدِّرَتْ وَالفِعْلُ بَعْدُمُوصَلاَ
Meaning:
“And make the fi’il mudhori’ manshub with idzan (إِذَنْ) if it indicates the future (mustaqbal), occurs at the beginning of the sentence, and the fi’il mudhori’ comes immediately after it without any separation.”
The author follows the opinion of Imam Ibn Malik in his Alfiyah, stating that amil nawashib consist of four particles: an (أَنْ), lan (لَنْ), kay (كَى), and idzan (إِذَنْ).
The Meaning of Mustaqbal
The term mustaqbal in the second line of the Alfiyah refers to the future tense. When someone expresses an action that will occur in the future using a fi’il mudhori’, the verb is made manshub by using idzan.
**Examples of Amil Nawashib with the particle lan (لَنْ) **
Lan (لَنْ) means “will not.” It indicates that the fi’il mudhori’ refers to a future action (zaman istiqbal). When a fi’il mudhori’ is preceded by lan (لَنْ), it becomes manshub (marked with a fathah). Here are 5 examples:
- وَقَالُوْا لَنْ تَمَسَّنَاالنَّارُاِلاَّاَيَّامًامَعْدُوْدَةً means “And they said, ‘The Fire will not touch us except for a few days.’”
- لَنْ يَضْرِبُوْكَ means They will not hit you.
- نَحْنُ لَنْ نَزُوْرَ فَلَسْطِيْنَ غَدًا means We will not visit Palestine tomorrow. Nazuura is marked with fathah because of lan.
- اَنَا لَنْ اَكْتُبَ قِصَّة فِى الْفَصْل means I will not write a story in class. Aktuba is made manshub by lan.
- نَحْنُ لَنْ نُكَذِّبَ اِلَيْكَ means We will not lie to you, Nukadzdziba is manshub because of lan.
**Examples of Amil Nawashib with the particle an (أَنْ) **
An (أَنْ) means “to / will.” It causes the fi’il mudhori’ after it to become manshub (marked with fathah). Examples:
- اَنَااَنْ أَقْرَأَالْقُرْانَ فِى الْمَسْجِدِ
Meaning: I will read the Qur’an in the mosque.
Aqra’a becomes manshub due to an. - نَحْنُ اَنْ نُصْنَعَ الْمَدْرَسَة
Meaning: We will build a school.
Tusna‘a becomes manshub due to an. - نَحْنُ اَنْ نُقَدِّمُوْنَ الْهَدَايَا
Meaning: We will give you gifts.
Tuqaddimūna is made manshub by the presence of an. - اَنَا اَنْ اَكْتُبَ كِتَابَا
Meaning: I will write a book. - نَحْنُ اَنْ نَزُوْرَ اَبُوْكَ
Meaning: We will visit your father.
**Examples of Amil Nawashib with the particle idzan (إِذَنْ) **
Idzan (إِذَنْ) can mean “then,” “in that case,” “if so,” or “therefore,” depending on the sentence. To make the fi’il mudhori’ manshub, three conditions must be met:
- It indicates the future (mustaqbal)
- It is placed at the beginning of the sentence
- The verb follows immediately without interruption
Examples:
- اِذَنْ نَقُوْلَ صَادِقًا
Meaning: Then we will speak truthfully. - اِذَنْ نَرْمِيَ الْكُرَّة
Meaning: If so, we will throw the ball. - إِذَنْ اُحْسِنَ اِلَيْكَ
Meaning: Then I will be good to you. - اِذَنْ اَكْتُبَ رِسَالَة لَكَ
Meaning: Then I will write a letter to you. - اِذَنْ نَزُوْرَ غَدًا
Meaning: Then we will visit tomorrow.
**Examples of Amil Nawashib with the particle kay (كَى) **
Kay (كَى) means “so that,” and it causes the following fi’il mudhori’ to become manshub. Examples:
- اِعْمَل لِكَى تَحْصُلَ عَلَى المَال
Meaning: Work so that you may obtain wealth. - اِقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ لِكَى تَفْهَمَ
Meaning: Read the Qur’an so that you may understand. - مَارِسَ الْقُرْآنَ لِكَى تَأْخُذَ الْعِلْمَ
Meaning: Practice the Qur’an so that you may gain knowledge. - احفظ القُرْآنَ لِكَيْ تصْبِحَ مُؤْمِناً
